Robert Lynd (1879-1949) was an Irish writer, essayist and Irish nationalist. Born in Belfast, he began his career as a journalist for the Northern Whig,
before moving to Manchester and then to London as a freelance journalist in 1901. In 1908, he became a staff writer for the
Daily News and from 1912 to
1947 was the paper’s literary editor. He is perhaps best known for his series of literary essays published in the
New Statesman between 1913 and 1945 under the pseudonym ‘Y.Y'.
