Spiro Agnew served as the 39th Vice-President of the United States of America under President Richard Nixon. On 1 August 1973, Agnew was placed under
investigation for tax fraud and corruption, after it was alleged that he had received kickbacks from an engineering firm on contracts it had received through Agnew’s influence, during his time as governor of Maryland. It was further alleged that these payments
continued into his vice presidency. By this time, the Watergate investigation, which would eventually
lead to Nixon’s resignation, was also well advanced. On 5 October, Agnew entered negotiations for a plea bargain to avoid jail time. He pleaded no contest on 10 October to the charge of tax evasion and resigned the vice presidency the same day.
