'A few miles north of Saffron Walden, going past wide fields and along almost deserted lanes, we come upon Littlebury and Great Chesterford. There is not much " o see" in these villages, unless we care to watch the routine of country life as it must have been practised since the days of the Anglo-Saxons ... Great Chesterford was at one time a considerable market town. In Roman days it was a settlement of importance, and the size of the church indicates how busy it must have been in the Middle Ages.'
