Dr Walter Leaf (1852-1937) was a banker and classical scholar. Having read Classics at Cambridge, he entered the family textiles firm of Leaf & Company Ltd in 1888, by which time he had established himself as the foremost Homer scholar of his generation with his translation of The Iliad (1886-88). A director of what would become the Westminster Bank from 1891, he was Chairman of the National Westminster Bank from 1918 until his death.
