Born in Berlin, Karl Hagedorn (1889-1969) came to England in 1905, and was naturalised in 1914, serving in the British army during the First World War. Studying art in Manchester, London (at the Slade) and in Paris, he became known as Manchester's first Modernist, and in addition to painting devoted time to cotton print designs, advertising and window display. He worked alongside his friend, Schwabe, who proved a great influence.
