Mottisfont House, near Romsey, Hampshire, SO51 0LP
24 January - 24 April 2022
In February 2020, Chris Beetles Gallery lent an exhibition of over 60 cartoons to the beautiful and picturesque Mottisfont, the National Trust property situated near Romsey in Hampshire. The exhibition was only on display for a couple of weeks before it was forced to close due to the Pandemic.
Last month, this second edition the exhibition opened at Mottisfont, showcasing a new collection of illustrations and cartoons, demonstrating a wide range of social preoccupations and plenty of humour. Simple jokes raise a smile while sharp satire provides perspective on current affairs.
The exhibition evokes Britain’s long history of pithy political commentary, exploring issues from the 1800s to the present, showing works by some of the best cartoonists working today, including Matt and Ed McLachlan, alongside old favourites such as Norman Thelwell, E H Shepard and William Heath Robinson.
