The Ex-Foreign Secretary Bird. Selwyn Lloyd
The Conservative politician, John Selwyn Lloyd (1904-1978), was best known as the Foreign Secretary (1955-60), under Anthony Eden, during the Suez Crisis, and then under Harold Macmillan. He proved less successful as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1960-62), and was sacked by Macmillan during the famous cabinet reshuffle known as the ‘Night of the Long Knives’. However, he returned to office under Alec Douglas-Home as Leader and Shadow Leader of the House of Commons (1963-65), and ended his parliamentary career as Speaker of the House of Commons (1971-76). Mark Boxer shows him in this last role.
