In April 1933, Randolph Schwabe spent a fortnight at the Royal Marine Hotel, Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, in the company of Karl Hagedorn and his wife. During their stay, Schwabe made a number of watercolours, including the present one of the pretty inland village of Godshill, with the tower of the Mediaeval church of All Saints dominating a cluster of thatched cottages.
