The novelist and playwright, Winston Clewes (1906-1957), made his name with Violent Friends (1944), a novelised biography of Jonathan Swift and his relationship with Esther Johnson. His third novel, Journey into Spring (1948), was advertised as ‘an original, exquisitely worked-out, richly human story of an English village and its mellowing influence on a stranger’, Godfrey Fletton, the last lord of the manor.
