The two parts of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV (1597-99) chart the development of Prince Henry, or Hal, the eldest son of King Henry IV, against the background of national events. Part one culminates in Hal killing in single combat Harry Percy, known as Hotspur, who has rebelled against the king. This is the episode that Eric Fraser has chosen to depict in order to illustrate the details in Radio Times of a programme of excerpts from Henry IV Part 1. It was aimed at GCE candidates and broadcast on the BBC’s Northern Ireland Home Service on 12 May 1966.
