Named after St Peter’s Chapel and built in c1365, the wooden covered Chapel Bridge diagonally crosses the Reuss river in Lucerne. The oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe is also remarkable for its17th century paintings (two thirds of which were sadly destroyed in a major fire in 1993). It has been Lucerne's major tourist attraction since the advent of the Grand Tour in the late 17th century. Goodwin painted the Chapel Bridge and indeed painted the views from it many times and regularly exhibited works of this subject.
