Lee Moor is in the south west corner of Dartmoor, only 25 miles from Hunt’s home in Manaton. His sketchbooks (sb13-42, 1924-1956) are full of drawings of the surreal luminous whites of the quarry which Hunt enjoyed placing against the natural backdrop of the Dartmoor hills.

Lee Moor china clay (kaolin) quarry, covers an area of over 4 square miles, it began production in 1830 and continues today, exporting over 80% of its production worldwide. Formed by the decomposition of granite, Kaolin is used in a wide range of products from Coca Cola cans and tennis balls to pipes and even the white lines on roads.
