Hunt first came across the hanging monasteries of Meteora in Greece on a tour with his friend and fellow artist, Curtis Green RA and his wife, in May 1931. He sketched several variations in his sketchbook [30], one of which he worked up to complete this painting. The medium format sketchbook was inscribed in the front: ‘With Curtis Green RA & Mrs G. Venice in a few days then steamer to Athens via Corinth Canal. Voyage in Greece & car to hanging monasteries of Meteora etc etc back from Brindisi up east coast of Italy to Stresa on L. Maggiore. See also book of photos and picture postcards.’
