The artist's family Hunt made sketches of the severe and majestic Les Baux in Provence during a motoring tour of southern France in 1921, (Sketchbook 4).
Les Baux-de-Provence is in the Alpilles mountains, north of Arles, in Southern France. Perched atop a 245m rocky outcrop, the medieval Château des Baux-de-Provence, was a built as stronghold during a period of turbulent military history. The powerful atmosphere of this severe subject is further enhanced by the onset of a tempestuous storm.
