On a visit to Pompeii in the early 1950s, as part of a scholarship from the City and Guilds of London Art School, James Butler was greatly influenced by the petrified figures, frozen in time by the disaster. He wrote 'These figures were like a half way between sculptures and real figures giving them a timeless yet human look. I was most impressed by them and made a number of sculptures with the same feeling.'
