Wells
This watercolour is a beautiful and rare example of Goodwin in Pre-Raphaelite mood. It also confirms the strength of his style and uniqueness of his vision even while displaying so much outside influence. The composition has many of his traits; for example, multiple subjects, here the focus being divided between the group of children at the water's edge and the reflection of the Cathedral in the water, with plenty of incidental detail. The device of a tree in the foreground diagonally dissecting the image plane also appears frequently in his work. Technically there is also much that is typical, including the deliberation in the brushwork of the foliage and the scratching-out of the apple blossom. However the palette is highly unusual with its pretty pastel shades so reminiscent of Hughes. Above all the execution is absolutely exceptional in its degree of detailing throughout and in particular the exquisite finishing of the children.
