Bruce Bairnsfather and Sir William Orpen
Dyson's cartoon probably dates from 1918, the year in which William Orpen (1878- 1931) was knighted for his services as an Official War Artist. His pictures of the Somme were exhibited at Agnews in the same year. The comic illustrator Bruce Bairnsfather (1887- 1959), who worked for the Bystander and created the character of 'Old Bill', was the most official of unofficial war artists and would have received a knighthood by popular vote. He served in France with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment between 1914-16.
