It is Bank Holiday weekend and we long to get away and head for the open road (and sit in a traffic jam). We are for the moment housebound, but imaginations can fly; so let us indulge our dreams of escape by voyaging our inland waters.
Britain is famously a seafaring nation, but it is also characterised by its many and varied waterways: rivers and canals, lakes and lochs, broads and fens. These are the natural arteries of our land, affording transportation, trade and recreation; they give life, they give biodiversity, they lighten our landscapes.
