The Moorish palace, depicted by Gabriele Carelli, was built in the Casbah of Algiers in 1798-99 by Mustapha Pacha, at the time that he became the Algerian Dey, a ruler under the authority of the Ottoman Empire. His reign was brief as, in 1805, he was assassinated by a janissary, an Elite Ottoman soldier. This occurred as a reaction to his policy of excessive export of wheat to France, which led to shortages in the country.
