In 1923 Hunt travelled to northern Italy and sketched many of the villages encircling Lake Garda, including the magnificent mountain town of Arco on its northern shore. The town is faced on one side by sheer limestone cliffs and is crowned by the high tower of the medieval Castello di Arco, clearly visible on this work. (sb9 and sb10). It is likely that this work is one of Hunt exhibited at the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours, either ‘Arco in the Valley of the Sarca’, Winter 1923, No 101 (bought by Wrenacre for £31) or ‘Arco’, Summer 1926, No 40 (bought by the Rt Hon C Allen for £52.10.0).
