This work is one of many by Albert Goodwin that was inspired by his reading of The Arabian Nights. When it was exhibited at the Fine Art Society in March 1896, its listing in the catalogue was accompanied by the following comment:

Sinbad merely mentions the island in one of his voyages, but the title is a very suggestive one. The huge wild bees’ nests hanging from the roof of the cavern are a very common object in India.
