The paintings that resulted from this study reveal an unparalleled freedom of handling, oil being treated almost with the liquidity of watercolour. Thus the boundaries of the spare, simple terrain are depicted as provisional, as if earth, sea and sky might merge or engulf each other. This counters any austerity or rigidity in the landscape, as does the accentuation of intense highland hues'.
