'Early in Peter's career, Etretat had seemed like a touchstone, the place and the painters it had attracted embodying all that he most valued. Yet, while he continued to draw on its inspiration over the years, it seems significant that he should have made it the subject of another major statement in 1987. For at that time, he was beginning to evolve another maritime theme, that of fishing nets hanging to dry [Achiltibuie, Scotland]... Its mood is signalled by its central motif, of windsurfers launching themselves out to sea. It is adventurous and ambitious, but in a relaxed and playful way. As such, it is antithetical to the passionate imagery of fishermen at work in an often harsh environment.'
