By 1980, Bargemon had become Peter's established base in the south of France, However, in 1983 Peter Coker rented the first of several apartments at the Villa Clos du Peyronnet, near Menton. The villa was surrounded by a magnificent garden including a grand double staircase flanked by large terracotta pots and an imposing, enclosed bamboo pathway. He made many drawings and oils of the bamboo path, where he explored the relation of colour to space. 'With every consecutive image there is an increasingly intense sense of confinement, as the viewer is adjusting to a change from light to dark and still sees the light in the darkness.' Absorbed by the patterns and shadows, Peter revisited here, in his later years, exploring the strong forms and intense light of the pathway in a yet more abstracted form.
