Designed by Thomas Rickman and consecrated in 1822, St Mary's Church, Birkenhead was built in response to the growing population. Only ten years later it was further extended and served the town for 150 years. However, by the 1970s the congregation had dwindled and the building in dire need of repair. It was demolished in 1975 but, the spire and tower were left as a landmark in response to local outcry.
