The Grassmarket lies to the south east of the Castle, at the base of the Castle Rock. Grassmarket was the site of a weekly cattle market from 1472 until 1911. The livestock entered the market via the Cowgate. The building on the north side, in the centre of the painting, was for many years the Black Bull Inn. The original building was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century, but the new building is still home to the Black Bull Inn.
