The Via Latina is a Roman road that runs approximately 200km south east from the Porta Latina, a single arched gate in the Aurelian walls of Rome, to the pass of Mount Algidus.
Augustus Hare depicts the Tombs of the Via Latina, which are mainly from the 2nd century AD, which are found along a brief stretch of the Via Latina. The tomb on the left is the Barberini Sepulchre, with its elaborate Roman frescoes and sculptures, and St Peter’s dome is visible in the distance.
