The church of San Gregorio in Messina, stood on the hill overlooking the Straights of Messina, sadly this baroque monument was destroyed (as was much of Messina) during the catastrophic earthquake of 1908. Augustus Hare depicts the lower terrace in front of San Gregorio, with the original thriving city of Messina below and the mountains of Sicily in the distance. [see also in The London Show 2025 , Cecil Arthur Hunt’s depiction of the devastation after the earthquake].
