The Lateran is an area near Mount Celio in Rome, named after the Laterani family, administrators to several Roman emperors. In the distance is the Archbasilica of St John Lateran and the attached Lateran Palace and Baptistry. The Basilica of St John Lateran is the oldest and most important of the great papal basilicas of Rome, having been consecrated in 324 by Pope Sylvester I. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, Augustus Hare depicts the present building, with the 18th century baroque facade, completed under Pope Clement XII in 1735. Although most papal ceremonies are now held in St Peter’s in the Vatican, St. John Lateran remains the cathedral church of Rome and the official ecclesiastical seat of the pope as Bishop of Rome. It is the mother church of Roman Catholicism worldwide.
