Through the introductions of his Pre-Raphaelite artist mentors Arthur Hughes and Ford Madox Brown Albert Goodwin had by late 1870 established a close relationship with John Ruskin who acted as a didactic artistic patron over the next few years. In the Summer of 1871 he is staying with Ruskin at Matlock Bath in the company of Arthur Severn. This watercolour dates from that sojourn, and in its fresh and colourful observed detailing it exhibits essential elements of Pre-Raphaelitism.
