On a visit to Pompeii in the early 1950s, as part of a scholarship from the City and Guilds of London Art School, James was greatly influenced by the petrified figures, frozen in time by the disaster. He wrote 'These figures were like a half way between sculptures and real figures giving them a timeless yet human look. I was most impressed by them and made a number of sculptures with the same feeling.'
