The painting depicts the view from Peter and Vera Coker's room in the Hôtel Pin Doré, Menton which they visited in 1992. Portraying the view across the road to the promenade and sea beyond, the painting depicts, '... palm trees and street furniture laid out along the strong yet gentle diagonal of the road... In the painting these overlap each other, a plethora of verticals uniting the picture space from high horizon to low diagonal. Interlinked with these is the long reflection of the setting sun. Beneath this busy surface lies an equally unifying structure, a series of radiating lines, starting with the horizon, and ending with the window sill'. Peter Coker RA, 2002, page 112-23)
