Hunt's close friend the art critic R H Kitson built a villa near Taormina, the Casa Cuseni. Hunt and his wife were regular visitors at the villa between 1920 and 1933. This painting was probably painted on his last trip in 1933 and then exhibited at the Royal Academy, Summer Exhibition 1934, no 970. (sketchbook 35)
