Robert Herrick (1591-1674) was a lyric poet and cleric, who, before and after the English Civil War, served as vicar of St George the Martyr, Dean Prior, Devon. He is best known for the collection of poems, Hesperides (1648), which includes 'To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time', containing the famous line, 'Gather ye rosebuds while ye may'. 'To Daffodils', another of his much-loved verses, conveys a similar message of making the most of our transient lives.
