Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) was a French Renaissance philosopher. His Essays exploring many philosophical musings were first published in 1580.

This illustration was probably drawn for Seeley's Elzevir series. Seeley and Co, founded in 1744, was one of Britain's oldest and longest standing publishing firms. Amongst its many publications were reprintings of works published in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Dutch publishers, Elzevir.
