John Milton (1608-1674) was a poet and intellectual. His epic poem Paradise Lost was published in 1667.

This illustration was probably drawn for Seeley's Elzevir series. Seeley and Co, founded in 1744, was one of Britain's oldest and longest standing publishing firms. Amongst its many publications were reprintings of works published in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Dutch publishers, Elzevir.
