Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was a writer, poet and playwright. His notable works include The Vicar of Wakefield (1766) and the play She Stoops to Conquer (1771).

This illustration was probably drawn for Seeley's
Elzevir series. Seeley and Co, founded in 1744, was one of Britain's oldest and longest standing publishing firms. Amongst its many publications were reprintings of works published in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Dutch publishers, Elzevir.
