William Blake (1757-1827) was a Romantic artist, print-maker, poet and visionary. His illuminated poems Songs of Innocence and Experience were published in 1794.

This illustration was probably drawn for Seeley's
Elzevir series. Seeley and Co, founded in 1744, was one of Britain's oldest and longest standing publishing firms. Amongst its many publications were reprintings of works published in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Dutch publishers, Elzevir.
